ACCOMMODATION


Expatriate staff are assigned to the Ogunu camp, which has 150 houses (many of them have recently been renovated) and also houses Nigerian staff and the Shell Primary School .

The family houses are of similar design, consisting of a large L-shaped living room/dining area, kitchen with gas cooker/oven, three bedrooms, bathroom with toilet and shower room with toilet. The utility room cum laundry, store room, car port and “boys” quarters for the house helpers are also part of the house. There are also several semi-detached houses for single teachers and some management houses. The houses all have gardens.

The houses have 7 air conditioning units and a ceiling fan either in the front patio or in the living room. You will be provided with a loan set of hard and soft goods when you first move in to your accommodation. The loan set includes furniture, cooker, fridge, washing machine, tumble drier, kitchen utensils and cutlery, that will cover you until your sea freight arrives and you have utilised the Hard Furnishing Allowance.

The Company provides maintenance services for the houses.

DOMESTIC STAFF


Domestic staff are readily available.. Check their references from ex-pat families they have worked for in the past. Lady staff (Nannies) are usually good for families helping with child-care and babysitting, as well as domestic chores. Male Staff (Stewards) usually help with cooking and household cleaning. Cooks are also available.

Gardeners are readily available – some are very good, others limited to grass-cutting and weeding. Drivers are readily available – advisable to check references, check SPDC driving licence and Nigerian Driving licence are held. In the Outpost Warri is a file with reference letters from drivers, nannies, cooks and gardeners.

Mail


Personal mail is usually sent via the Company system, via the Central Offices or carried by obliging staff visiting base country. There are two Expat. Mail addresses that can be used:

Telephone


Each house is supplied with two push button telephones that operate on the SPDC exchange, as well as NITEL.

The cost of private international calls is deducted from your salary (you will receive an itemised bill).

Electricity


Electricity is provided by the National Electric Power Company, backed up by generators in each compound. Sockets are 220-240 volt (50 hertz) square 3-pin plugs – British system.

Each house is fitted with at least one emergency light in the event of power failures.

Water


Water is piped into the house but must be boiled and filtered before it can be used for drinking or in the preparation of food.

Fumigation and Pest Control


The house surrounds and gardens are sprayed regularly against pests.

An optional internal spraying inside the house on an appointed date a few times a year is given.

Rubbish collection


There is a household refuse collection service. Garden rubbish should be placed in the nearest large yellow bin on the roadside outside your house.

Pets


Dogs are not allowed on camp but cats and kittens are permitted. Guinea pigs, rabbits and caged birds are available locally.
