Schooling

Introduction

You are advised to contact the schools as early as possible, inform them about details of your child's educational needs, and send them details of previous educational history and school reports in advance of your arrival.

The Ministry of Education requires the following for entrance to all schools:
  • Transfer certificate from previous UAE school or leaving report from school abroad. This should report dates the child entered and left the school and name of last class completed. The certificate should be written on school headed paper and be signed and stamped by the head teacher/principal.
  • Original birth certificate and photocopy.
  • Copy of passport (child and parent sponsor).
  • Copy of residence visa (child and parent sponsor).
  • Four passport size photographs.

Most schools will also ask for vaccination records.

On whole, private schools teach either the UK or US curriculum, although institutions are beginning to adopt the International Bacculearate Diploma scheme for 16-18 year olds.

Standards

Standards of primary and secondary education are generally high, with many schools recruiting European, Australian and American qualified teachers. However, you should note that for certain ages, places at popular schools are at a premium. Unfortunately, it will be even more difficult to find places for children with special needs.

Schools are assessed by inspectors from the Knowledge and Human Development Authority. A summary of the results of these inspections are published on the KHDA website.
Each institution is categorised thus:

Outstanding
Almost all elements of the school's work operate highly effectively. There are significant examples of excellent practice.
The school delivers fully on an ambitious set of promises to parents.
Good
The school performs well in all the key aspects of its work. The senior staff are capable of leading further improvement.
The school delivers well on all the key aspects of its promise to parents.
Acceptable
The school has no significant weaknesses, but may face challenges in some key aspects of its work. The senior staff are aware of them and understand what will be involved in overcoming them.
The school fulfils most aspects of its promise to parents.
Unsatisfactory
The school has evident weaknesses. It appears at present to lack the capacity to improve significantly without considerable support.
The school does not deliver key aspects of its promise to parents.
