Lunches Around the World

Gerda Van LoonRamadan Kareem

This region must be the only one in the world where there is such a massive departure of people during the summer months, leaving the “Summer Man/Woman” (a new term I picked up) alone for weeks and weeks, and the roads and malls empty.

But the malls are now starting to fill up again with Ramadan shoppers and freshened-up families unite again. So time to get organized for next season! A lot of new families have arrived as you might remember from the June and July newsletter.  We at Outpost are looking forward to get to know you all and to lot’s of new inspiration and initiatives!

Although we are aware of Ramadan we want to invite all spouses who arrived over summer this week to a New Arrivals Gathering in the MoRe Café at the Gold and Diamond Souk (near Interchange 4).  If you are fasting you might be able to drop in anyway and get to know a few faces and exchange contact details.

At the Outpost office we are planning a lot of things coming months. Like a First Aid course for families. If you have ideas you would like to share or are planning on things you might want to do but not alone, just let us know! We are happy to be of service to get you together or advertise.

In the office the process of the Office Consolidation Project (a nice word for moving around desks) has started during the summer months, people are being moved around to new places. Desks and new walls pop up overnight! It’s an ever changing environment here. Very Dubaian! This morning I overheard somebody say: “I cannot find anybody anymore here in this office!”  Of course it’s a nuisance but the positive side is that apparently we still need each other face to face to get the best results!

Please see elsewhere in this newsletter for more details on the above mentioned announcements.

Take care,

Gerda

Monthly Get Together

The next Get Together will be hosted by:

Gerda Van Loon

Tuesday 21 September 10am to Noon

Directions will follow in separate mail to spouses

New Arrivals

Are you a Shell spouse and just arrived over summer? Then we would like to invite you to meet with other new arrived Shell spouses here in Dubai. Although it is Ramadan and some of you might be fasting, it would be lovely if we can meet this week in the MoRe café in the Gold and Diamond Souk (directions see http://www.morecafe.biz/locations/g-en-d-park.html) on
Tuesday the 7th round 10 am.
It can be a bit difficult to find, the café is inside the parking area of the Souk and covered with the purple words MoRe as seen on the website.

Cultural Awareness Workshop

Cultural AwarenessIf you arrived in the UAE within the last year on an international contract (IBAS) and have not already attended this very interesting and informative workshop, you are encouraged to attend the next session planned for Thursday 7 October @ 9am in Shell's Convention Tower office.
The event is free to Shell staff and partners, lasts approx. 4 hours and will be hosted by Wael Al Sayegh, who will discuss a range of topics covering Emirati society - history, religion, social, business, family etc. You are welcome to ask any question you have about living and working here in Dubai.
If you are interested in coming, please contact us here at Outpost.
To learn more about Wael (he is also an accomplished poet and storyteller, who occasionally guests on tv programmes), please go to www.waelalsayegh.com

NEW !! Shell Expatriate Website

Anyone who has relocated or supported an expatriate move will know how important it is to make the process as easy as possible so that the person can be effective in their new post quickly. Help is now at hand with a new DVD from Shell's Expatriate Policy team. The DVD contains 30 three-minute films covering everything from general International Mobility policy overviews to tax issues to consider before expatriation. Copies are available from our Shared Service Centres or can be viewed on the new expatriate website https://expatriation.shell.com/index.shtml by entering the user ID expatriation_user and the password clew7hid.

Anna Cairns, Shell's Expatriate Policy and Remuneration Advisor, said: “We have produced the DVD after getting feedback from expatriates and those supporting the relocation process in HR and the line. The expatriate policies are all explained on our website but we know that they can be difficult to get to grips with, especially when time is very short. The aim is to support staff and their families and make the move as straightforward as possible for them so that they can settle in quickly and get on with being effective at work. The material also explains both the company and employee obligations on assignment.

“We have kept each film short and used actors in role play situations to take viewers through each step of the process in a way that is easy to understand and will then help them get the most out of the expatriate website.”

The DVD should prove useful for first-time expatriates and those relocating to a new assignment, as well as providing a helpful overview for HR staff and line managers.

(Note that this is a public website and therefore available to anyone with access to the web. Please do not pass on user and password details.)

Forecast

As temperatures begin to fall after the height of the summer there is a sting in the tail for residents of coastal cities. Sea temperatures reach a peak at the end of August and it is therefore during this time that the potential for warm, humid air to be advected to the coast reaches a maximum. September is far from being the most humid month but it has the highest humidity of the hot summer months. For this reason September is extremely humid and is one of the months with a high occurrence of fog. Night time temperatures begin to drop into the upper 20’s °C and fog will often form in the early morning hours. Maximum temperatures can still occasionally reach extremes of 45°C with extreme minimum’s around 22°C. Sea temperatures begin to fall later in the month with the mean for the month of around 32°C. Average Max Temperature = 39°C

Ramadan (رمضان) is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and the month in which the Qur'an was revealed. Ramadan is the holiest months in the Islamic calendar. Fasting in the month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. The month is spent by Muslims fasting during the daylight hours from dawn to sunset. The name came from the time before the Islamic calendar, when the month of Ramadan fell in the summer. Fasting during this month is often thought figuratively to burn away all sins. Muslims believe that the Qur'an was sent down to the lowest heaven during this month thus being prepared for gradual revelation by angel Gibril (Gabriel) to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). The first day of the next month is spent in celebrations and is observed as the ‘Festival of Breaking Fast’ or `Eid ul-Fitr'.

Shawwāl (شوّال) is the tenth month of the lunar Islamic calendar. Shawwāl means to ‘lift or carry’; so named because she-camels normally would be carrying a foetus at this time of year.
The first day of Shawwāl is Eid ul-Fitr. Some Muslims observe six days of fasting during Shawwāl beginning the day after Eid ul-Fitr since fasting is prohibited on this day. These six days of fasting together with the Ramadan fasts, are equivalent to fasting "perpetually", according to Sahih Muslim. The reasoning behind this tradition is that a good deed in Islam is rewarded 10 times, hence fasting 30 days during Ramadan and 6 days during Shawwāl is equivalent to fasting the whole year in terms of reward.[1]  It is a common misconception that the six days of fasting must be undertaken on consecutive days, but there is no hadith that support or stipulate this.
